Welcome Back
Welcome back to The Earned Edge, where we help thoughtful people stop chasing the "best" business and start building the one that best fits the life they want to live.
Today I want to share a simple idea that's quietly become the foundation for everything I teach. Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it, and it changed the way I think about choosing, building, and growing a business.
The Big Idea
When someone decides to start a business, the first question is almost always the same.
"What business should I start?"
It's a reasonable question.
It's also the one I think we've been taught to ask too soon.
Because before we choose a business...
before we choose an audience...
before we choose an offer...
there's another question waiting underneath all of them.
Who is the person who's going to build this business?
I don't mean your customer.
I mean you.
The builder.
The one who will wake up every morning and do the work.
The one whose values, strengths, energy, season of life, and definition of success will quietly shape every decision that follows.
Most business advice begins with the business.
I believe it should begin with the builder.

Stop Paying for 6 Tools. One AI Does It All
Most e-commerce sellers are running their store across 6 to 8 separate tools — and paying hundreds of dollars a month for the privilege. StoreClaw replaces your entire stack with one autonomous AI engine that monitors competitors, optimizes listings, automates marketing, and tracks real profit across Shopify, Amazon, and beyond.
It doesn't wait for you to ask. It runs 24/7 in the background, so you wake up to a full dashboard instead of a list of things you forgot to check.
Connect your store, and StoreClaw gets to work — no prompts, no complex setup, no six-app stack.
Free to start. No credit card required.
The Deep Dive
The more people I've talked with over the years, the more I've noticed a pattern.
Very few struggle because there aren't enough opportunities. They struggle because there are too many.
Every podcast recommends a different business model.
Every YouTube video promises another path.
Every expert seems convinced their way is the best way.
So thoughtful people do what thoughtful people always do.
They research.
They compare.
They make lists.
They watch one more video.
They download one more guide.
All the while trying to answer a question that doesn't actually come first.
"Which business should I build?"
But imagine trying to choose the perfect pair of hiking boots before deciding where you're hiking.
The "best" boots for climbing mountains aren't the best boots for walking along the beach.
The destination changes the decision.
Business works the same way.
Before you choose the business, you have to understand the person who will be building it.
What kind of work gives you energy instead of draining it?
How much flexibility do you want?
How visible do you want to be?
Do you enjoy creating, teaching, serving, analyzing, selling, leading, or building behind the scenes?
What kind of life are you hoping this business will support?
Those aren't side questions.
They're the foundation.
Because the goal isn't simply to build a successful business.
The goal is to build a business that faithfully supports the life you're trying to create.
When the builder becomes clear...
the business usually becomes much clearer too.
Your Tactical Takeaway
Take out a blank sheet of paper.
Not to brainstorm business ideas.
Not yet.
Instead, answer these three questions.
What kind of work leaves me feeling energized instead of depleted?
What kind of life do I hope this business makes possible?
If this business succeeds, what do I hope it gives me besides income?
Don't worry about business models.
Don't think about trends.
Just pay attention to your answers.
Because before you build a business...
you should understand the person who's going to spend the next several years building it.
That's enough for today.
Until Next Time
If today's newsletter resonated with you, I'd like to invite you to take the next step.
I created the free Business Alignment Code™ Assessment for people who are asking, "What business fits me?" but have realized that the better place to begin is with themselves.
Rather than starting with business ideas, the assessment begins by helping you think through the life you want to build, the way you're naturally wired to work, and what success actually looks like for you.
Only then does it recommend two or three business models that are well aligned with the life you're trying to create.
That's The Earned Edge in practice.
Build the life first.
Then build the business that faithfully supports it.
Until next time,
— Debbi
