The 3 Stories Every Expert Must Tell

This week, we completely changed the way we look at our past.

On Monday, we learned to embrace our scars as proof of our real-world expertise. On Wednesday, we learned that we are the guide in our client's journey, not the hero.

You have the right mindset. Now, you need the right material.

The Blank Page Problem

Understanding the theory of storytelling is easy. Sitting down to a blank screen is hard.

You might be wondering what stories you are actually supposed to tell. Your life is.

You do not need to write an autobiography. You just need to pull the three most powerful books off your shelf.

The Expert's Core Trilogy

These are the three foundational narratives every expert must tell. They build trust, establish authority, and clearly illustrate the value of your work.

  1. The Origin Story: Why do you do this work? What specific moment led you to this mission? This story reveals your motivation and builds a deep personal connection.

  2. The Client Transformation Story: Who is someone you helped? How did you guide them from frustration to success? This story provides powerful social proof and paints a clear picture of the result you deliver.

  3. The "Why It's Different" Story: How did you discover your unique approach? This usually begins with your frustration with the old way of doing things. This story establishes your unique intellectual property and authority.

"Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you make, but about the stories you tell."

Seth Godin

Your experiences and the results you deliver are the most compelling assets you own.

Your Next Step: The Story Seed Bank

You do not need to write a novel today. You just need to plant the seeds for these three stories.

If you use AI to help you outline, open your favorite tool and paste these simple prompts one at a time:

  1. “Ask me three questions about why I started my business. Then, summarize my answers into a short origin story."

  2. "Ask me about a client I helped recently. Turn my answers into a short story about their success."

  3. "Ask me what frustrates me about the usual advice in my industry. Help me explain why my approach is completely different.

Or answer these questions on your own to begin recording your story:

  1. What was the exact moment I realized I had to start doing this specific work?

  2. Who is the client I am most proud of helping, and what did their life look like before they met me?

  3. What is the one piece of popular advice in my industry that I know is completely wrong?

You have just planted the seeds for your next three articles. These three stories are the pillars of your brand's messaging.

P.S.You now have the seeds for your best stories. But a powerful story cannot help anyone if your email stays unread.

Next week, we are going to master The Art of the Open. I will share a simple formula for writing subject lines and preview text that actually get clicked, without ever resorting to cheap marketing tricks. Enjoy your weekend, and I will see you on Monday.
