Welcome to The Earned Edge: A weekly guide for experts over 50. Turn your wisdom into sustainable income without the marketing noise.
In this edition: Why the most important work in marketing isn't writing better copy—it's listening better.
The Conversation I Almost Missed
A few weeks ago, someone asked me what online business they should start.
At first, I answered the question they asked.
We talked about blogging, affiliate marketing, YouTube, digital products, and all the usual options.
Then they said something that changed the entire conversation.
"I don't want to spend the next five years building the wrong life."
That wasn't a business question.
It was a life question.
And I almost missed it.
They didn't need another list of business models.
They needed someone to help them think through the kind of life they were trying to build.
Only then could we decide which business made sense.
That conversation has stayed with me ever since.

We Spend Too Much Time Talking
Most business advice focuses on what to say.
Write a better headline.
Improve your hook.
Use stronger calls to action.
Tell better stories.
Those things matter.
But I've become convinced they aren't where great marketing begins.
Great marketing begins with a much simpler question.
What have I learned by listening?
The more people I talk with, the more I realize something.
The best insights rarely come from surveys or analytics.
They come from quiet conversations.
The question someone asks after a Zoom call officially ends.
The email that starts with, "Can I be honest?"
The comment someone makes when they finally stop trying to sound impressive.
That's where you discover what people are actually wrestling with.
And once you understand that, writing becomes much easier.
Better Conversations Create Better Businesses
One of the biggest shifts I've made over the past few years is this:
I spend less time trying to think of what I should say...
and more time trying to understand what people are trying to solve.
Those aren't the same thing.
When you understand the real question behind someone's question, your products become more useful.
Your emails become more helpful.
Your recommendations become more trustworthy.
You stop creating content to attract attention.
You start creating content that helps someone move forward.
That changes everything.
Your Next Step
This week, instead of asking yourself,
"What should I post?"
Try asking a different question.
"What conversation have I had recently that taught me something important about the people I serve?"
Write about that.
Not because it will perform better with an algorithm.
Because it will connect with a human being.
The best content usually begins as a real conversation.
